Miss Van/ Retna & El Mac: Shows To See

As an artist you do not just have to be conscience of what you are creating and where you are moving forward but also how your peers and “art heroes” are progressing. You can learn a lot from just watching on reading about artists and everyone has a handful of artist that they absolutely love and are inspired by. I recently saw some new work and read a wonderful interview from Miss Van (HERE) over @Juxtapoz.com. Miss Van was one of my first inspirations in creating these unique yet similar female characters that I paint today. She has a wonderful solo show opening October 1st @StolenSpace Gallery in London. Mac and Retna (HERE) are the definition of collaboration. They bring incredible technique and you can tell that there is a constant level of communication in their work as they push each other to make really powerful painting and murals. You can view images of their recent show @Robert Berman Gallery in California. Both shows are open to the public so make sure to catch them out if you are in the area.

Interview: @SensesLost with PaperMonster on "Friends with Knives" Stencil Group Show

I had the pleasure to sit down with Senses Lost (HERE) and chat about the process of curating the "Friends With Knives" Stencil Group Show current open at DirtyPilot.com (HERE). The interview covers everything from the styles of stencil art I wanted to highlight in the show as well as the my thoughts on the future of stencil graffiti. Here is a short excerpt from the interview: To read more visit:
::Via SensesLost:::
Explain the concept behind “Friends with Knives Show”?
The entire concept behind the “Friends with Knives” show is ultimately about diversity. When I was approached to curate a stencil group show through DirtyPilot.com. I wanted to have stencil artists that really cover a wide range of styles. We are all individuals and have taken the fundamentals from cutting thick pieces of cardboard with a kitchen knife to making beautiful works of art......
"As stencil artists we have a common bond and we know the hardships and struggles that come with the work that we do. The process of cutting stencils can be grueling but at the same time it is extremely difficult to gain respect and admiration for the huge amount of work and dedication that we put in from the art world at large." -PaperMonster

Also, I want to send a HUGE thanks to everyone who covered the show on sites all over!!

PHOTOS: Raritan River Art Walk 2009 New Brunswick, NJ

This past weekend marked 2009's Raritan River Walk mural event in New Brunswick,NJ. Last year was a really great time and the turnout this year was even bigger. It was great to see everyone coming together and pushing each other to try new things. I want to thank everyone who not only came out to paint but who also stopped by and shared such great words of encouragement. This year I wanted to experiment with some new ways to use the wall and I stumbled upon what I call "black holes." Hope to make more of these in the future.
